The Chan Journey.

Explore the places associated with China’s six Chan patriarchs, from Mount Song through Nanjing, Anhui and Huangmei to Shaoguan and Guangzhou, with neighbouring sites grouped into regional chapters.

Follow the route.

Inspired by Bill Porter’s Zen Baggage, this 15-day journey connects the temples by region, with time for travel. The order follows practical geography rather than patriarch succession.

Arrive in Zhengzhou and continue by private road transfer to Dengfeng. Settle in near Mount Song, with time to rest and an introduction to Chan and its six-patriarch tradition. The journey groups places by geography; the stories will connect them without requiring visits in patriarch order.

A 15-day starting point from Zhengzhou to Guangzhou, including arrival, departure and intercity travel. Neighbouring places are grouped for practical travel rather than visited in patriarch order. Inspired by Bill Porter’s Zen Baggage, this is our own route, not a reproduction of his journey. Exact transport connections depend on your dates. Early patriarch stories are presented as Chan tradition; teacher meetings, organised meditation and monastery stays require separate arrangements.

A Zhongnan extension.

Xi’an and the Zhongnan Mountains can be added before the Zhengzhou start for Buddhist and Daoist mountain traditions. This needs extra travel time and is not part of the 15-day core route. Bill Porter’s Zen Baggage follows his own route from Beijing to Hong Kong; our itinerary is independently designed around practical transfers.

Before you decide.

Do I need to be Buddhist?

No. The journey can focus on history, philosophy, architecture or personal practice, while respecting the religious life of each place.

Is this Bill Porter’s exact itinerary?

No. His book is an inspiration and suggested reading. Our own 15-day journey groups the sites by region, from Zhengzhou to Guangzhou, rather than following his route or the chronological order of the patriarchs.

Can I add the Zhongnan Mountains?

Yes. Xi’an and the Zhongnan Mountains can form a separate extension, preferably before the Zhengzhou start where transport connections suit. Allow separate travel time and one or two full days in the Zhongnan area; it is not included in the 15-day core route.

Can this itinerary be tailored to us?

Yes. Tell us your dates, interests, preferred pace and hotel preferences so we can discuss changes to this starting point.

What determines the final price?

Travel dates, group size, accommodation, transport and the experiences you choose shape the quote. Your written proposal sets out the exact services and total price.
