Ngari · Kailash & Guge

Ngari is a demanding journey through western Tibet, where Kailash, Manasarovar and the remains of Guge belong to a vast high-altitude landscape.

Kailash is sacred to several religious traditions. A viewing journey and a pilgrimage circuit are different commitments; the latter involves strenuous walking at altitude. Guge requires additional travel and should have its own time within the wider route.

A carefully supported warm-season journey is usually the starting point. Confirm current access, permits, acclimatisation and medical suitability before choosing demanding walks.

Different sides.
A fuller picture.

Find the places and stories that matter to you, then give them the time they deserve.

Kailash as a sacred landscape

Kailash is revered in several religious traditions. Visitors may approach it for pilgrimage, landscape or cultural understanding; these intentions lead to different itineraries. Completing the high-altitude circuit is a serious physical undertaking, not a default sightseeing activity.

Manasarovar & open plateau

Lake Manasarovar and the surrounding plateau invite a slower reading of the landscape. Weather, wind and great distances matter as much as the named viewpoints.

Guge & western Tibetan history

The ruins at Tsaparang introduce the former Guge kingdom and its religious art. This is a distinct western extension with its own road stages, not a short detour from every Kailash itinerary.

Time well spent.

A staged western journey

Build the approach over several nights with suitable acclimatisation and realistic driving.

With pilgrimage or Guge

Add dedicated days for the chosen focus rather than trying to combine every ambition in the shortest possible circuit.

At the local table

Expect simpler meals and fewer choices in remote areas. Discuss food requirements before departure and plan appropriate supplies with the operator.

Choosing your base

Accommodation, access and transport need detailed advance confirmation. High altitude and remoteness make personalised planning essential.
