Zhongwei

Zhongwei brings together the Yellow River and the edge of the Tengger Desert. A landscape day can be gentle and contemplative, without turning into a compulsory sequence of adventure activities.

Shapotou is an established starting point. Choose the amount of dune walking and any optional activity around comfort, weather and the actual operating arrangements; leave time to understand the river landscape too.

Spring and autumn often suit outdoor days. Summer heat and blowing sand may change activities; keep a flexible plan and sun protection.

Shapotou: river meets desert

Shapotou’s distinctive setting comes from the Yellow River beside sand dunes. Choose a programme that allows time for the landscape itself, with recreational activities optional. A short camel ride or vehicle activity should not displace the wider geographic story.

Gaomiao & the town

Gaomiao offers an architectural and religious counterpoint to the desert. Its layered buildings reward a closer look, while the town provides a place for regional food and a slower evening before or after the dunes.

A quieter desert stay

An overnight outside town can offer a different pace, but lodging standards, transport and comfort vary. Confirm the setting and activities rather than promising silence, clear stars or particular light on fixed dates.

Time well spent.

2 days · town & dunes

Combine Gaomiao and local food with a dedicated Shapotou outing.

3 days · add a desert night

Allow an overnight and a gentle return, keeping a flexible programme for wind or extreme temperatures.

At the local table

Ningxia lamb and noodle dishes provide a substantial local meal. Keep food, water and sun protection planned for time away from town.

Choosing your base

Choose town convenience or a desert setting according to your priorities. Agree transfers and facilities before committing to a remote stay.
