Shantou adds a port-city chapter to Chaoshan: arcaded streets, overseas connections and an exceptionally rewarding food culture.

The Xiaogongyuan district makes a good starting point for architecture and migration stories. Chaozhou complements the city on another day; Nan’ao Island is a separate coastal extension requiring its own transfer and weather check.

Autumn to spring often suits walking. Summer storms and typhoons can affect coastal travel.

Xiaogongyuan & a port city’s arcades

The Little Park district introduces Shantou through arcaded commercial streets and the history of overseas connections. Surviving buildings and recent restoration together shape the streets seen today. A slower walk, with time for shopfront details and a local meal, is more revealing than a quick circuit around the central pavilion.

Chaoshan food & everyday neighbourhoods

Food provides a strong reason to stay, especially when a guide can explain ingredients and the role of small specialist kitchens. Balance popular old-town streets with an ordinary market or neighbourhood, and let the meal carry part of the city’s migration and trading story.

Nan’ao Island

Nan’ao adds beaches, coastal scenery and an island rhythm beyond the urban visit. Choose an island base or a coherent day circuit instead of driving the entire coast simply to collect viewpoints. Wind, holiday traffic and sea conditions affect how relaxed the outing feels.

Time well spent.

2 days · the port & its food

Give the old-city area a substantial walk, then add a neighbourhood or cultural visit with time for contrasting meals.

3–4 days · add the island

Spend a separate day or night on Nan’ao, or continue to Chaozhou for a complementary historic-city chapter.

At the local table

Chaoshan beef, seafood and rice-based snacks reward a sequence of small tastings. A tea pause can explain the social rhythm behind the region’s gongfu tea tradition.

Choosing your base

Choose the city for food and arcade walks, the island for a coastal stay. Avoid promising both a full island circuit and an in-depth old-town visit on the same day.

A Local Perspective

Explore tea and regional dishes through small, carefully chosen stops rather than a rushed tasting checklist.
