Tonglu & the Fuchun River
The Fuchun River’s bends and hills connect landscape painting, poetry and stories of retreat from public life. Tonglu is a useful base for Yan Ziling Fishing Terrace; Fuyang farther downstream adds the Huang Gongwang chapter associated with Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains.
Yan Ziling Fishing Terrace recalls a scholar who, in later tradition, chose seclusion over office. The riverside site has two terraces, a memorial hall and inscriptions left by later admirers; Fan Zhongyan’s writing helped carry Yan’s story through the centuries. In Fuyang, Huang Gongwang opens another lens on the river through his Yuan-dynasty handscroll, Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains. Begun in 1347, the painting took several years to complete and survives in two sections, held today in Zhejiang and Taipei. It is not a literal topographical map: the journey follows places connected to its making and cultural afterlife.
