Chaozhou

Chaozhou rewards attention to small rituals: a carefully poured cup, a carved detail and the sound of an old street. Its bridge and riverside setting connect that intimacy to a wider trading history.

Follow the old city towards Guangji Bridge, then leave space for tea rather than rushing to the next monument. Local woodcarving, ceramics and cooking offer different ways into Chaoshan culture.

Spring and autumn suit walking. Summer heat and rain call for breaks; bridge access and special programmes are checked for your date.

Guangji Bridge & the Han River

Guangji Bridge is a defining introduction to Chaozhou’s engineering and river setting. Pair it with the waterfront and the old city rather than treating it as a stand-alone photo stop. Access and the appearance of its floating section depend on operating arrangements.

Old-city lanes, temples & ancestral buildings

The archway streets are a starting point, not the whole old city. Choose a walk that includes Kaiyuan Temple and quieter lanes, explaining the difference between religious buildings, family institutions and commercial streets. Look closely at roof decoration and craft details.

Gongfu tea & skilled hands

Tea preparation provides an intimate way into Chaoshan social life. A craft-focused visit may introduce ceramics, wood carving or other local traditions through a suitable venue. Allow time for conversation and process rather than treating a tasting as a compulsory shopping stop.

Time well spent.

2 days · the old city in depth

Combine bridge and river time with a separate lanes-and-temple walk, leaving space for a tea encounter and several small meals.

3 days · a wider Chaoshan journey

Continue to Shantou or add a focused craft visit without repeating the same old-town experience.

At the local table

Beef hotpot, rice-based snacks and carefully prepared tea offer different entry points. Choose modest portions across the day and discuss unfamiliar ingredients beforehand.

Choosing your base

Stay near the old city for early walks, with attention to vehicle access and street noise. A Shantou extension needs its own route rather than constant shuttling.
