Hulunbuir.

Meandering rivers, meadow grassland and time to understand life on the steppe.

Discover
Hulunbuir

Hulunbuir asks for space in the itinerary. Based around Hailar, a first journey can follow the grassland and the bends of the Morigele River, with room to watch the light change rather than race between distant viewpoints.

The Morigele area in Chen Barag Banner is a natural introduction to the meadow landscape. Use established access routes and viewpoints: these are working and ecologically sensitive lands, not an open invitation to drive anywhere.

Cultural encounters should be arranged thoughtfully. A conversation about pastoral life or an introduction to music depends on a willing host and a suitable setting. Ergun and forest areas can extend a longer stay, with additional nights and travel time; Hohhot is not a nearby day-trip gateway.

Summer is the main season for green grassland; conditions vary each year. Early autumn brings a different palette and cooler nights. Carry layers and weather protection even in summer.

Find the places and stories that matter to you, then give them the time they deserve.

Grassland is a region, not one stop

Hulunbuir’s scale is central to the experience. The grasslands around the Morigele River offer sweeping views, but light, grazing and season continually change the scene. Leave time for stops rather than measuring the journey only by distance covered.

Ergun & borderland histories

Ergun’s wetlands and river landscapes introduce another side of the region. Settlement histories and cross-border cultural influences reward thoughtful interpretation. Choose a coherent northern circuit instead of repeatedly returning to the same distant base.

Manzhouli or a forest extension

Manzhouli offers a contrasting border-city chapter, while forest routes create a different nature journey. These choices extend the trip in different directions. A hosted pastoral encounter should be arranged with consent and clearly distinguished from a tourist performance.

Time well spent.

4–5 days · one grassland circuit

Use Hailar as a gateway, then select a compact grassland-and-Ergun route with sufficient driving breaks.

6 days or more · add contrast

Include Manzhouli or a forest extension, allowing additional nights rather than enlarging every driving day.

At the local table

Lamb, dairy foods and regional home cooking can be part of the route. Meals at smaller bases should be agreed around dietary preferences before departure.

Choosing your base

Summer grasslands and winter snow require different plans. Distances, weather and the exact accommodation location matter more than city labels on a map.
