Hongcun and Xidi reward a stay beyond a quick excursion from Huangshan: ponds, lanes and merchant homes reveal the social world of historic Huizhou.

Look beyond the familiar reflections to the layout of a settlement and the craft of its doorways. The two villages offer complementary visits, with a transfer between them. A village-based overnight lets the day begin more gently.

Spring and autumn are pleasant for walks. Early mornings can be quieter; homes still have residents, so ask before entering or photographing interiors.

Hongcun: water & village design

Hongcun’s ponds, channels and lanes make sense when explored as a water-linked settlement rather than a collection of postcard views. Start before the busiest period if possible, then follow the relationship between houses, courtyards and shared spaces. Residents and businesses still shape the village today.

Xidi: merchant houses & carved details

Xidi offers a complementary architectural visit through merchant homes, stonework and wood carving. A guide can explain the social ideas expressed in gateways and interiors, helping the details become more than decoration. Allow time to compare the two villages instead of rushing through nearly identical photo stops.

The wider Huizhou countryside

Smaller villages and rural walks can make a third day quieter. Choose them around real access and a particular interest in architecture or landscape. The Huangshan mountain massif is a different outing, requiring its own base, weather window and walking plan.

Time well spent.

2 days · Hongcun & Xidi

Give each village a substantial visit, with time for surrounding lanes and meals rather than fitting both into a short transfer stop.

3–4 days · villages & mountains

Add either a slower countryside day or a separately planned Huangshan visit. Keep the mountain day flexible for visibility.

At the local table

Huizhou cooking includes strongly flavoured dishes such as fermented mandarin fish and hairy tofu. Introduce unfamiliar flavours gradually, with straightforward alternatives and dietary needs discussed.

Choosing your base

A village stay brings quieter evening and morning hours, while a broader Huangshan-area base can simplify transfers. Uneven lanes and stairs should be considered when choosing accommodation.
