Shenzhen offers a window onto contemporary urban China: a changing skyline, public parks and neighbourhoods shaped by rapid growth. Approach it through people and design as well as buildings.

The civic centre and the view from Lianhuashan frame the city’s modern story. A museum or design-focused visit can deepen the day, while a neighbourhood meal keeps it grounded in everyday life.

Autumn to spring is often more comfortable outdoors. Summer heat and rain call for indoor alternatives and a lighter walking programme.

Find the places and stories that matter to you, then give them the time they deserve.

Nantou: older layers within a new city

Nantou introduces an earlier urban history within today’s metropolitan landscape. Its lanes now combine heritage interpretation, residents, shops and contemporary regeneration. A walk can explore this mixture honestly, rather than presenting the area as either untouched antiquity or an entirely new theme district.

Civic Centre, parks & design

The Civic Centre and Lianhuashan give a broad view of the city’s modern development. Pair them with a carefully selected museum, gallery or design venue. The interest lies in how people use the city as much as the skyline itself.

Shekou or Dapeng: choose a direction

Shekou offers a waterfront and industrial-transformation story, while Dapeng’s fortress settlement and nearby coast belong to a farther eastern excursion. They should not be squeezed into the same short city day; choose around contemporary culture, older history or beach time.

Time well spent.

2 days · a contemporary city with roots

Spend one day around Nantou and a selected design area, another around civic spaces, a museum and local neighbourhoods.

3 days · a coastal extension

Add Shekou for a lighter urban waterfront day or Dapeng as a dedicated excursion with realistic transport time.

At the local table

Shenzhen’s dining reflects migration from across China. A neighbourhood food walk can compare regional kitchens alongside Cantonese options, making the city’s population story tangible.

Choosing your base

Choose a base around the districts you will actually visit. The city is elongated; repeated east–west transfers consume time, especially for a Dapeng extension.
