Ordos.

Kubuqi dunes, contemporary city spaces and the cultural landscapes of western Inner Mongolia.

Discover
Ordos

Ordos is a region of contrasts rather than a single desert stop. The dunes of Kubuqi sit within a much larger landscape of towns, modern architecture and Mongolian cultural histories.

Choose a defined desert area and allow real time to reach it. Xiangshawan, in Dalad Banner at the eastern edge of Kubuqi, is one established approach; a scenic visit can be shaped around walking and photography without making motorised activities the centre of the day.

Pair the landscape with time in Kangbashi and a museum visit, subject to current exhibitions and opening arrangements. Hohhot can be linked as another stay. Do not add Hulunbuir as if it were a neighbouring grassland: the distances call for a separate journey.

Spring and autumn are often practical for desert days. Wind, blowing sand and summer heat affect activities; carry sun protection and keep the programme flexible.

Museum & a changing city

Ordos Museum and the Kangbashi district offer a contemporary architectural introduction alongside regional history. The city’s rapid development, monumental public spaces and wider landscape make an intriguing urban contrast to the surrounding grassland and desert.

Desert landscapes

The Kubuqi Desert offers dunes and visitor activities, with experiences ranging from quiet landscape observation to developed recreation areas. Choose the setting around the traveller’s interests, and make vehicle-based activities optional rather than the definition of a desert visit.

Genghis Khan commemoration

The Genghis Khan Mausoleum area is a commemorative and ritual site, not a verified burial place of Genghis Khan. A contextualised visit can introduce Mongolian memory and ceremony, with respect for the distinction between public displays and religious practice.

Time well spent.

2 days · city & desert

Pair museum and urban context with a dedicated desert outing.

3 days · a cultural extension

Add the mausoleum area on a separate regional circuit, avoiding long cross-region drives between every headline site.

At the local table

Mongolian-influenced meals may include lamb and dairy foods. Discuss richness, portion sizes and alternatives so the food remains enjoyable through a multi-day stay.

Choosing your base

Kangbashi, Dongsheng and the desert attractions are separate locations. Choose accommodation after deciding the route, with wind and temperature changes in mind.
