Discover
Lhasa

Lhasa brings together major monuments and the everyday religious life around them. Begin gently, allowing the altitude and the rhythm of the city to shape your first days.

The Potala, Jokhang and Barkhor offer different perspectives, while larger monasteries need their own visiting time. Walk respectfully among worshippers and distinguish a public visit from private religious practice.

Travel arrangements and Tibet approvals must be confirmed before arrival. Start with rest and gentle activity at elevation; monument visits follow the confirmed ticket arrangements.

Find the places and stories that matter to you, then give them the time they deserve.

Potala Palace & the city below

The palace is both a monumental building and a place connected with Tibetan religious and political history. Its stairways and altitude call for an unhurried approach after acclimatisation, with the available visiting arrangements confirmed in advance.

Jokhang & the Barkhor

Jokhang Temple and the surrounding pilgrimage circuit bring sacred architecture into contact with everyday devotion. Follow the flow respectfully, avoid interrupting worshippers for photographs and leave room to observe rather than rushing from façade to façade.

Monasteries beyond the old centre

Sera and Drepung offer different settings and histories. Choose one in depth or spread them over separate days. Public access to a courtyard does not guarantee a particular debate, ceremony or encounter with resident monks.

Time well spent.

3–4 days · settle into Lhasa

Start gently, then combine the old city, palace and a selected monastery.

5 days · a slower cultural stay

Add another monastery or an interest-led museum and neighbourhood day before travelling farther.

At the local table

Tibetan noodles, bread, sweet tea and seasonal vegetables can be explored at a comfortable pace. Discuss dietary needs before longer journeys beyond the city.

Choosing your base

The old-city area suits walking; access and hotel comfort vary. Current Tibet travel arrangements and a gradual altitude plan need confirming for the individual traveller.
