Ganzhou brings southern Jiangxi into view through riverfront walls, historic lanes and the wider world of Hakka communities.

Start in the old city, where the meeting of rivers helps explain the importance of trade and water management. Longnan’s enclosed Hakka residences make a compelling extension, but require their own transfer and visiting time outside Ganzhou’s urban centre.

Spring and autumn suit urban walking. Summer rain may affect riverfront access; Longnan should be planned as an additional day.

River walls & the meeting of waters

Ganzhou’s old-city walls and riverfront help explain the position of the city at a river junction. Walk a selected section and relate the defences to trade and urban life. The floating-bridge area offers another riverside perspective when access permits, with time for watching everyday activity.

Confucian Temple & old streets

The Confucian Temple provides an architectural and scholarly counterpoint to the river walls. Pair it with nearby lanes and a local meal, focusing on the city’s layered history instead of treating all restored streets as ancient fabric. A slower walk is particularly rewarding for architectural details.

Hakka houses beyond the city

Longnan’s enclosed residences belong to a wider southern-Jiangxi journey. They introduce Hakka community and defensive architecture but are well outside a casual central-Ganzhou walk. Add an overnight extension or dedicated travel day if these houses are a principal interest.

Time well spent.

1–2 days · the historic city

Keep the Confucian Temple, selected old streets and riverfront together, allowing time for a meal and the best walking light.

3 days or more · add Longnan

Separate the city introduction from a planned Hakka-house excursion, with transport and access agreed for the selected residences.

At the local table

A local meal can explore southern Jiangxi and Hakka influences through rice-based foods, preserved ingredients and home-style dishes. Ask the guide to distinguish local specialities from the standard tourist menu.

Choosing your base

Base in Ganzhou for the urban heritage walk. Do not describe Longnan as a nearby neighbourhood; a broader Hakka itinerary needs its own routing and accommodation choices.
