Xingyi.

A quieter corner of southwest Guizhou, where limestone peaks rise above village fields and waterfalls drop into Maling River Canyon.

Discover
Xingyi

Xingyi invites a slower reading of Guizhou: cultivated valleys beneath a forest of limestone peaks, Buyi villages and a dramatic river gorge.

Begin at Wanfenglin, where roads and footpaths connect viewpoints with fields and villages. The landscape changes with the crops and seasons; time at ground level reveals more than a quick panoramic photograph.

Give Maling River Canyon a separate day. Its waterfall-lined cliffs create a very different experience from the open valley, with steps and walkways that need to match your comfort with walking.

For a cultural extension, explore Buyi musical traditions or the region’s geology. Hosted encounters are arranged with local participants; a visitor programme should leave room for conversation rather than promise a private performance on demand.

Plan scenic visits around current weather and access, with time for walking, transfers and the local stories along the way.

Find the places and stories that matter to you, then give them the time they deserve.

Wanfenglin · a landscape people live in

Cone-shaped limestone hills rise from cultivated land around villages such as those in the Nahui valley. Choose a viewpoint, then spend time among lanes and fields to understand the relationship between farming and karst terrain. Scenic transport and a gentler village walk can replace a longer walking route; seasonal crop colours are part of the setting, not a year-round guarantee.

Maling River Canyon · below the rim

A separate outing brings you into a steep gorge where cascades descend from the walls. The interest lies in the scale, rock textures and changing views along the cliff paths. Wet conditions, steps and route closures can affect the visit. This is a canyon walk, not an effortless viewpoint stop or a place to add casually after a full Wanfenglin day.

Buyi music & deeper local stories

Buyi Bayin seated singing is a recognised intangible cultural tradition associated with Xingyi: musicians combine instruments and sung stories in a shared setting. A suitable hosted encounter can introduce its sound and meaning, subject to availability. The Xingyi Geopark Museum offers a further angle on the region’s geology and fossil heritage for travellers who want to understand what lies beneath the scenery.

Time well spent.

2 days · the two main landscapes

Allow one day for Wanfenglin’s viewpoints and villages and another for Maling River Canyon, staying in Xingyi between them.

3–4 days · culture and breathing room

Add a museum visit, a carefully arranged Buyi encounter or more time in the valley; leave flexibility for the weather.

At the local table

Rice dishes, cool rice rolls and regional sour and spicy flavours offer an everyday thread through Xingyi. Discuss dietary preferences before a village meal.

Choosing your base

A city base makes transfers and services straightforward; accommodation near Wanfenglin suits travellers who prefer village mornings. Xingyi is a distinct southwest-Guizhou stay, with a substantial onward road transfer to other parts of the province.
