China Beyond Travel · Updated
Huang Gongwang began Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains beside this river in 1347 and worked on it for several years. The long scroll later survived a fire in two sections, now held in Zhejiang and Taipei. Its mountains are an artist’s vision rather than a turn-by-turn tourist map. Fuyang and Tonglu connect that vision with places, people and the older story of Yan Ziling’s withdrawal from office. Give the river enough time to be a landscape, not merely a transfer.
The painter’s river
Begin with the Fuyang chapter and the world of Huang Gongwang.
ZHEJIANG · HANGZHOUFuyang & Huang Gongwang
The Fuyang chapter connects the river with the Yuan painter’s long handscroll and the story of how its two surviving sections came to rest in different collections.

The scholar in retreat
Tonglu offers a distinct story in the same river landscape.
ZHEJIANG · TONGLUYan Ziling Fishing Terrace
Two terraces, a memorial hall and later inscriptions remember Yan Ziling’s refusal of office; Fan Zhongyan’s writing helped carry that ideal forward.

Make the journey your own.
- A two-day Tonglu stay focuses on the fishing terrace; the three-day route adds Fuyang and the painting story.
- River cruises vary by season and availability. The final itinerary states the actual service rather than assuming a particular boat.
- The handscroll is an artwork, not a precise depiction of a modern visitor route.
