Dunhuang sits where Silk Road history meets the desert. At the Mogao Caves, painting and sculpture tell stories of faith and exchange; beyond the city, the dunes around Crescent Lake offer a very different sense of scale.
With more time, travel west towards Yumen Pass and the wind-shaped yardang formations. These are longer desert excursions, so the route works best with time for driving and rest. Mogao visits follow reserved time slots and conservation-led access to selected caves.
