Hohhot.

Temple courtyards, Mongolian cultural histories and the flavours of Inner Mongolia’s capital.

Discover
Hohhot

Hohhot is a useful place to begin understanding Inner Mongolia before travelling into its landscapes. The old city brings temple architecture, local food and the region’s overlapping cultural worlds into walking distance.

Dazhao is the principal anchor for a first visit: its halls and artistic traditions connect the city to Tibetan Buddhism and Mongolian patronage. Explore respectfully as a visitor to a living place of worship, then continue through the surrounding streets.

The Five Pagoda Temple offers a contrasting architectural focus. Leave time for a regional museum visit if the collections match your interests. Ordos can form a separate onward chapter; Hulunbuir lies far to the northeast and needs its own travel arrangements.

Late spring to early autumn suits city exploration; winter requires warmer clothing and a shorter outdoor programme. A city stay does not automatically include a grassland visit.

Dazhao & the older city

Dazhao introduces Tibetan Buddhist traditions in Inner Mongolia through its halls, imagery and worship. Pair it with nearby older streets, allowing time for religious context and a local meal rather than only a quick look at the temple façade.

Five Pagoda Temple & museum context

The Five Pagoda Temple offers a distinctive architectural and sculptural visit. Inner Mongolia Museum adds a wider view of steppe histories and material culture. Select the themes that interest you and allow separate travel time between the city’s cultural sites.

Grasslands beyond the city

A grassland outing is a different journey from the urban temple circuit. Choose an appropriate area and season, with realistic expectations about landscape, accommodation and hosted activities. A staged camp programme is not the same as everyday pastoral life.

Time well spent.

2 days · a cultural city stay

Combine Dazhao and the old streets with a separate Five Pagoda Temple and museum day.

3–4 days · add grassland time

Include a dedicated countryside stay or excursion, keeping travel and seasonality visible in the plan.

At the local table

Lamb, dairy foods and shaomai are possible introductions, alongside lighter dishes. A local breakfast can be a useful part of the city walk.

Choosing your base

Base centrally for temples and meals. Grassland journeys need separate routing; do not assume year-round green scenery.
