Xiamen.

Gulangyu’s lanes, southern Fujian flavours and a city shaped by the sea.

Discover
Xiamen

Across a short stretch of water from Xiamen, Gulangyu invites you to walk rather than rush. The island’s architecture records encounters between local traditions and an international community; its shaded lanes reward curiosity beyond the best-known viewpoints.

UNESCO lists Kulangsu—the spelling used in its inscription—as a historic international settlement. Read its buildings as a connected neighbourhood, allowing time for slopes, gardens and the waterfront rather than trying to enter every attraction.

On the mainland, Xiamen adds Minnan food, tea and older shopping streets. A temple visit or a relaxed coastal walk can complete the stay. Quanzhou and the Fujian tulou are separate onward journeys with their own travel time.

Spring and autumn are appealing for walking. Summer heat, rain and typhoons can affect ferry plans; confirm island reservations and transport for your dates.

Gulangyu: an island with layered histories

Gulangyu’s lanes, buildings and gardens reflect a distinctive international settlement history. Choose a route that explains institutions and domestic architecture, with time away from the busiest shopping areas. Ferry arrangements and walking with luggage should shape the day or an island overnight.

Zhongshan Road & the working city

Arcaded streets and food stops around the older centre introduce a different Xiamen from the island. Extend beyond the busiest pedestrian strip where appropriate, using neighbourhood life and local kitchens to bring the city into focus.

Temple & coast

Nanputuo offers a living Buddhist setting, while selected coastal paths provide a gentler outdoor afternoon. A tulou excursion belongs to the inland Fujian region and needs a separate travel day; it is not a nearby urban attraction.

Time well spent.

2 days · island & city

Give Gulangyu a substantial day, then combine the old centre with Nanputuo and a coastal walk.

3–4 days · an inland chapter

Add a separately planned tulou stay or continue to Quanzhou, allowing transfers without sacrificing the city visits.

At the local table

Shacha noodles, oyster-based dishes and peanut soup are possible starting points for a small tasting walk. Let appetite and dietary preferences shape the selection.

Choosing your base

A central mainland base simplifies ferries and meals; an island night rewards those comfortable with pedestrian lanes and luggage logistics.
