Altay & Kanas

Northern Xinjiang asks for a different journey from the southern oases. Around Kanas, forest, river bends and a mountain lake provide the focus, with time for weather and road travel.

Altay is a regional gateway rather than a convenient same-day base for every scenic area. Use overnight stops near the places you plan to explore; Hemu and other village landscapes are additional chapters, not quick roadside photographs.

Summer and early autumn are popular, with changing conditions and busy periods. Winter requires a distinct itinerary and transport plan.

Kanas: lake & forest

Kanas combines lake views, forest and mountain scenery within a managed visitor area. Choose walking and transport around the available routes, allowing time for the landscape instead of a rushed circuit of viewpoints. Weather and season change the experience substantially.

Hemu & village surroundings

Hemu offers village architecture and surrounding landscape, with strong seasonal appeal. It is also a busy tourism destination with working guesthouses and shops; quieter hours offer a different atmosphere, while residential spaces remain private. A night can provide quieter hours than a brief midday visit.

A regional journey, not one city stop

Altay is the gateway name for a large northern-Xinjiang region. Burqin, Kanas and Hemu need explicit routing and overnight choices. Winter travel has different access, equipment and comfort requirements from a summer or autumn programme.

Time well spent.

4–5 days · Kanas & Hemu

Allow arrival and road time, with separate stays or substantial visits in the main areas.

Longer · a slower northern circuit

Add walking time or another landscape stage, keeping seasonal access and weather flexibility central.

At the local table

Meals in smaller scenic bases may be simpler than in the gateway towns. Discuss dietary preferences before travel and allow relaxed stops on long road days.

Choosing your base

Book the exact village or scenic-area base that fits the route. Distances and internal transport make an overnight plan essential.
