Alxa introduces another Inner Mongolia: desert journeys where huge dunes and unexpected lakes replace the familiar image of grassland.

Badain Jaran is the focus of this journey. Alxa covers a vast area; Ejina’s poplar forests are a separate extension with substantial driving, not a nearby stop. Choose a supported route with enough time for the distances.

Spring and autumn are often preferable to peak summer heat. Wind and temperature swings affect plans; travel with experienced local support.

Badain Jaran’s dunes & lakes

The desert’s high dunes and enclosed lakes create a distinctive landscape, best approached as a supported journey with carefully chosen stops. Wind and light transform the views; a quiet period beside a lake can be more rewarding than a rapid succession of dune crossings.

A desert temple & human presence

The temple and settlement traces within the desert add a human and religious dimension. Their significance comes from the relationship between people, water and an extreme environment. Treat these as specific cultural places rather than anonymous scenery.

Choose a realistic desert programme

A short gateway excursion and a multi-day interior crossing are very different commitments. Discuss vehicle arrangements, accommodation, walking, heat and personal comfort before selecting a route. Ejina’s seasonal poplar forests are a separate Alxa journey, not an adjacent stop.

Time well spent.

2–3 days · a focused desert introduction

Allow arrival and a supported excursion with a sensible return or agreed overnight.

Longer · an interior journey

Build a multi-day route around suitable logistics and current conditions, with contingency time rather than fixed sunset promises.

At the local table

Meals and drinking water need advance planning in the desert. Use gateway towns for broader choices and make dietary requirements clear before an interior stay.

Choosing your base

Alxa is vast. Agree the actual gateway and overnight locations; do not treat Badain Jaran and Ejina as one compact sightseeing area.
