The Li River landscape
The river between Guilin and Yangshuo provides changing views of karst peaks, villages and cultivated land. Choose the actual boat route and duration; not every “Li River” outing covers the same section.
Limestone peaks, river journeys and village paths at a gentler pace.
Guilin is the gateway; Yangshuo is where many travellers choose to linger. The Li River carries you between limestone peaks, while the smaller Yulong River brings the landscape closer to village lanes and cultivated fields.
Treat the river journey as a substantial part of the day, rather than an item between other attractions. Travel downstream towards Yangshuo, then stay overnight so that the countryside does not become a hurried return excursion.
Around the Yulong River, choose a short walk or an easy cycle suited to your confidence. Rice noodles, a market visit and an introduction to regional cooking add everyday life to the scenery. Longji’s terraces require a separate extension, not a quick detour from Yangshuo.
Spring can bring mist and rain; summer is hot and river conditions can change. Autumn often suits outdoor days. Boat and raft operations depend on water levels and weather.Find the places and stories that matter to you, then give them the time they deserve.

The Yulong River area and countryside lanes suit slower exploration. Walking, cycling or an appropriate raft outing depends on the traveller and current conditions; leave time away from the main entertainment streets.
Longji is a separate mountain area with villages, slopes and seasonal agricultural scenery. An overnight allows a better pace than adding a long return drive to a full river programme.
Use Guilin as needed for arrival, then give Yangshuo meaningful time.
Add Longji with an overnight and a walking route suited to your ability.
Guilin rice noodles provide a simple local introduction; countryside meals can focus on seasonal produce and regional cooking.
Stay in Yangshuo for rural exploration and choose a quieter exact location if rest matters. Summer rain and heat can change outdoor plans.
