Shannan

Shannan opens a deeper chapter of Tibetan cultural history through the Yarlung Valley and the monastery of Samye.

Plan Samye and the Tsetang area with realistic road time between them. Yumbulagang adds another perspective on the valley’s historical memory. This is a guided extension after acclimatisation, with Tibet travel arrangements confirmed in advance.

Allow acclimatisation before active days. Seasonal weather and access shape the route; foreign visitors need the appropriate Tibet travel arrangements.

Find the places and stories that matter to you, then give them the time they deserve.

Samye: a monastery as a world

Samye’s arrangement is traditionally understood through Buddhist cosmology. Exploring its layout with context makes the visit more rewarding than photographing the central building alone.

Yumbulagang & the Yarlung Valley

The hilltop Yumbulagang is associated with traditions of Tibet’s early rulers. These foundation stories belong to Tibetan tradition and are part of the site’s cultural meaning. The surrounding valley adds an agricultural landscape to the religious narrative.

Temples & travel geography

Tradruk and other valley sites can complement the main visits, but Shannan is a broad region. Choose a coherent valley-based programme instead of treating every place carrying the regional name as nearby.

Time well spent.

2 days · a valley introduction

Combine selected Tsetang-area sites with a separately planned Samye visit.

3 days · a gentler circuit

Allow more time at monasteries and in the valley, with comfortable transfers to or from Lhasa.

At the local table

Simple Tibetan meals, bread and tea accompany the valley stay. Discuss preferences before leaving larger centres.

Choosing your base

Tsetang is a practical regional base. Road stages, altitude and current access arrangements shape the plan.
