WHY MAKE TIME FOR IT
Begin with a closer look.
Before travelling west into the Hexi Corridor, pause in Lanzhou. Painted pottery, Silk Road material and Buddhist art let you see Gansu as a meeting ground of communities and ideas, rather than simply a passage between famous sights.
Choose the right venue. The museum is in Lanzhou. Wuwei’s Leitai and Dunhuang’s Mogao Caves are separate destinations, not additional galleries that can be folded into the same day.

IN THE COLLECTION
Four ways to look deeper.
01
Painted pottery before the Silk Roads
Majiayao and related ceramic traditions bring pattern and form to the foreground. Compare the placement of painted lines around a vessel’s curves; a pot can be both a made object and evidence of a community’s choices.
02
Travel, exchange and the frontier
Use the Silk Road collections to think about how objects and people moved. A route is not a single line: settlement, official administration, trade and belief followed overlapping networks.
03
The bronze galloping horse
The famous horse is associated with the Eastern Han tomb discovery at Leitai in Wuwei. Treat it as a collection highlight to check, rather than a guaranteed object on your visit; its expressive movement can introduce the region’s later travel imagery.
04
Buddhist art in context
Sculpture and religious material provide a useful bridge to Maijishan, Mati Temple or Dunhuang. Compare a portable object with a sculpture created for a cave: setting changes how an image is encountered.
PLAN YOUR TIME
A pace that lets you look.
Allow 3 hours for pottery and one other theme. For a deeper introduction before a longer corridor journey, give the museum a relaxed half-day rather than squeezing it around a late arrival.
Opening arrangements, reservations, current displays and any specialist gallery access are confirmed before travel. Ask before photographing; follow local rules on flash and sensitive displays.
BEYOND THE GALLERIES
Carry the story into the place.
Carry a few visual questions into the Hexi Corridor: how images change between places, what trade leaves behind, and which connections survive in material form. Lanzhou can be the beginning of that story.
