Yunmen Temple

Discover the mountain setting of Yunmen Wenyan’s teaching and a different Chan lineage within the Shaoguan region.

China Beyond Travel · Updated

Yunmen Mountain’s Dajue Chan Temple, usually called Yunmen Temple, is the ancestral home of the Yunmen school founded by Master Wenyan.

This temple appears in Bill Porter’s Zen Baggage. Our suggested visit is independently arranged around today’s travel geography.

Why this place matters

The temple broadens a Guangdong Buddhist journey beyond Huineng and Nanhua. It introduces one of Chan’s later major schools, with its own teacher, setting and history.

What to notice

Explore the temple courtyards and their relationship to the mountain landscape. Its farming tradition provides another way to discuss how monastic work and practice can belong to the same daily life.

Where it fits

Pair it with Nanhua Temple as a longer Shaoguan stay, giving each temple time. Yunmen lies in Ruyuan, while Nanhua is in a different part of the region; allow for road transfers. This is an optional addition, not a stop already included in the 15-day journey.

A thoughtful visit

Dress modestly, follow the temple’s visitor guidance and ask before photographing people or interiors. A cultural visit does not automatically include meditation sessions, teacher meetings or monastery accommodation; we discuss any such interests separately.
