Yunju Temple

Explore the stone scriptures of Fangshan and a different side of Beijing’s Buddhist heritage.

China Beyond Travel · Updated

Yunju Temple lies in Fangshan, southwest of central Beijing. Its stone scriptures place the preservation of Buddhist teachings at the heart of a visit.

This temple appears in Bill Porter’s Zen Baggage. Our suggested visit is independently arranged around today’s travel geography.

The scripture tradition

Successive generations carved Buddhist texts into stone over more than a thousand years. The temple, pagodas and associated scripture caves form a remarkable record of that sustained work.

Where it fits

Add a dedicated excursion from Beijing before travelling south. This is a separate journey into Fangshan, rather than a quick stop between central-city sights.

A thoughtful visit

Dress modestly, follow the temple’s visitor guidance and ask before photographing people or interiors. A cultural visit does not automatically include meditation sessions, teacher meetings or monastery accommodation; we discuss any such interests separately.
