China Beyond Travel · Updated
White Horse Temple broadens the story beyond Chan’s patriarchs to the earlier arrival and transmission of Buddhism in China.
This temple appears in Bill Porter’s Zen Baggage. Our suggested visit is independently arranged around today’s travel geography.
Why this place matters
Traditionally founded in the Eastern Han period, White Horse Temple is recognised as China’s first state-established Buddhist monastery. It offers context for the religious world from which later Chinese Buddhist traditions developed.
Where it fits
Add a Luoyang chapter before the Dengfeng and Shaolin part of the main journey. This keeps the Henan visits together and allows time for the interests you most want to explore.
A thoughtful visit
Dress modestly, follow the temple’s visitor guidance and ask before photographing people or interiors. A cultural visit does not automatically include meditation sessions, teacher meetings or monastery accommodation; we discuss any such interests separately.
