Mount Song, the central member of the Five Great Peaks, rises above Dengfeng in Henan. Shaolin Temple is the best-known name, but the broader mountain and surrounding historic monuments tell a much larger story of belief, learning and architecture.
Give Shaolin’s temple and pagoda forest their own time, and choose a mountain viewpoint or trail according to conditions. Dengfeng’s monuments are dispersed, so a second day works better for travellers who want to explore beyond Shaolin.
